How to Restore Files and Folders in Windows XP with NT Backup?

No back up should be considered valid until you can confirm that you can actually restore the files! There are reams of pages filled with stories of people who dutifully backed up their data only to find out there was something wrong with the backup and the restore didn't work. Do the following to restore files from you backup:

  1. Click Start and then click the Run command.
  2. In the Run dialog box, type ntbackup in the Open text box and click OK.
  3. In the Backup Utility dialog box, click on the Restore Wizard button. Click Next on the Welcome to the Restore Wizard page.
  4. A list of previous backups on this machine appears on the What to Restore page. If the backup was done on another machine, it won't appear on the list. Click the Browse button to find the .bkf file created on the other machine.
  5. After selecting the appropriate .bkf file, click the "+" sign to the left of the file name. Then click on the folders to see the files that are included in the back up file. If you place a checkmark in the checkbox to the left of the backup file name, it will restore all the files contained in backup. If you don't want to restore all the files, you can put a checkmark to the left of the appropriate files or folders that you want to restore. After you select your files, click Next.
  6. On the Completing the Restore Wizard page, click the Advanced button.
  7. You have the option to restore the files to an alternate location on the Where to Restore page. Select the Alternate location option and then type in the path where the files should be restored. Click Next.
  8. On the How to Restore page, select the option that best fits how you want to deal with files that already exist in the location you decided to restore to. In general, it's best to leave the existing files intact and not overwrite them. Click Next.
  9. Leave the default settings on the Advanced Restore Options page and click Next.
  10. On the Completing the Restore Wizard page, click Finish. The Restore Progress dialog box will tell you when the restore is complete. Click the Close button and close the Backup Utility.

Now open the Windows Explorer and check out the files. Open a few of them to make sure the files are readable. Congratulations! You've successfully restored files from your backup.
