How to improve Windows XP performance by disabling unneeded services?
But how do you determine which
services are needed?
The following is a step-by-step on how to determine what services are
required. If you follow these procedures, you will definitely improve your
computer's performance! But what happens if you happen
to run into trouble? You can use the LAST KNOWN GOOD startup option if
you can't boot into the operating system, and you can use the System Restore
function to get back to where you were before making the changes [make sure
to leave the System Restore Service on Automatic otherwise you will
not be able to use the System Restore function]. Give it a try!
- Click Start.
- Right-Click on My Computer.
- Click on Manage.
- Expand the "Computer Management" window to full screen (it helps later
on).
- Click on the [+] by Services and Applications in the left-hand
frame.
- Click on Services.
- Look at the Startup Type column.
- Right click on any service that is shown as Automatic, and select
Properties from the pop-up menu. From the Startup type drop-down menu,
select Manual. Click the OK button. Important!: Leave the
Windows Audio service in "Automatic". Note: You will
not be able to change the Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
service. It must be "Automatic".
- Repeat step 8 until all "Automatic" services are changed to
"Manual".
- Close the "Computer Management" window.
- Restart your computer.
- Log on as Administrator. Note: This might take a little longer than
usual, due to having no "Automatic" services.
- Before you do anything, perform the following steps.
- Click Start.
- Right-Click on My Computer.
- Click on Manage.
- Expand the "Computer Management" window to full screen (it helps later
on).
- Click on the [+] by Services and Applications in the left-hand
frame.
- Click on Services.
- Look at the Status column.
- Right click on any service which is shown as Started and select
Properties from the pop-up menu. From the Startup type drop-down menu
select Automatic. Click the OK button.
- Repeat step 21 until all "Started" services are changed to
"Automatic".
- Important! Check to ensure your Anti-Virus service
(such as Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect Service) is set to "Automatic".
- Close the "Computer Management" window.
- Restart your computer.
- Log on
Your performance should be faster now! If you find something does not
work, examine your services, and change the appropriate one(s) from "Manual"
to "Automatic," then restart Windows.
